Simple Bevel
This is a
simple little text/layer effect your image editing program probably
comes with a beveller, which is probably more complicated, but this
is a simple way to do it. The thing I like best about it is that you
can bevel thin surfaces, like thin text - you can even have a bevel
of 1 pixel, if you wish.
First, create a new empty raster layer for your text. Create text -
either as "floating", or as a vector, and go to the "selection" menu
and pick "create selection fro vector". pretty much, you need the
text, and you need a selection around it, you could also use a tool
to select it afterwards, want to do. the easiest way for me is to
create it as a vector, deform/resize it as I need, make the
selection from the vector object, and convert it into a raster -
STEP #1. You can either use a
simple color, or a gradient, I prefer the gradients myself.
STEP #2 - Duplicate your text layer twice, while leaving the
selection. Use the "Cutout" Filter on one of the duplicates, enter
similar settings as to the sample image. you can set the settings as
you like, that's an example.
Basically, what it will do is create a black "fringe" around the
bottom right of the text. the offset values will determine how
"wide" the bevel is, the more offset, the wider the bevel. the blur
is how sharp the bevel is. I'd suggest opacity at 100.
Once you've done that, select the other duplicate, and do the same,
except: reverse the offset values (if you used -1 and -1, set them
to 1 and 1) and change the color to white - this will create a white
"fringe" on the upper right.
doing that should get you to STEP #3.
STEP #4 is the drop shadow - I usually do two drop shadows. the
first one is a solid shadow, with no blur, and 100& opacity -
something like 2-3 pixels to the right and down, to give it the 3-d
look, kind of. the other one is lighter, softer, and offset more.
You can use this if you've got some kind of bar or line, like a
frame to a banner or a signature. simply select what you want to
"bevel", duplicate that selection, do the cutouts.
