Cool Backgrounds

Well, if you've been into web design for a while now you've probably noticed how either boring or ugly HTML backgrounds are. But, never fear- there is a solution! And a simple one at that. Today I'm going to show you five of my favorite background textures.
Note: All textures are shown in red to help portray detail, you can change them to any color you want as you learn later on in this tutorial.

1. TV Lines- TV Lines is the background we currently use, and it's one of my favorites. It's a great background because it isn't disorienting at all but adds a nice effect if the visitor looks at your page closely.

2. Plaid Madness- Plaid Madness is a great background because (amazingly) it gives you a dark and light shade of any one color you put in, just because of the texture!

3. Connect the Dots- Connect the Dots gives a nice...well...dotty feel. It gives the color of your choice as a solid with white holes in it.

4. Sliding Boxes- Sliding Boxes is most interesting not in the actual texture, but in how it's created. The actual background starts out at an X shape, but actually shows up as a box texture that appears to have little slides going through it.

5. Thicker Than You Can Handle- Thicker Than You Can Handle is a cool background for sites that have the "bold" look going on.

OK, so you've seen the textures and have probably now picked your favorite. Now onto how to use them. First, right click the link of your favorite texture that says "Download Background". Select "Save Link As..." and save it into the images folder of your webpage. Next, insert this element into your body tag, replacing the * with the name of the background you chose:

<body background="images/*.gif">
Now, you've probably got an ugly red background on your page. But, that's easily fixable! Just open the background image you downloaded with your favorite image editor program and change the red to any color you like! When you're done, save as. That's it!
