Fett101

Quag’s Corner: Tell me a little about yourself.

Fett101: I’m 21 years old and currently in college trying to get some web programming degree. I love computers, Star Wars (hence the name Fett101). Love just about all genres of music, except modern mainstream crud. I enjoy Sci-Fi books. (You know. The usual geeky kind of stuff.

QC: Do you have any good memories that have to do with Family Guy?

F: Just the hours and hours I’ve spent watching it, discussing it at DYA, and creating for the FGMMA.

QC: Who's your favorite character on Family Guy and why?

F: Brian. I can just relate to Brian (though really… that’s what every Brian fan says). Well… he’s a dog in a human’s world. You would think he would be out of place, but he does his thing and manages better then most people.

QC: What inspired you to start FGMMA?

F: I actually wanted to just learn how to use PHP and MySQL. What better way then building a site using them. Though once I decided to make a website, I had to pick what to make it about. I noticed that there weren’t any amazing wallpapers, and I had Photoshop experience, so wallpapers is what I did. The audio and video was somewhat or an afterthought. The FGMMA was hosted on a server in my room at first, so hosting media was out of the question, but I couldn’t really call it a multimedia archive when I’m only serving one kind of media.

QC: On average how much time do you spend working on FGMMA each week?

F: Goodness knows. I can go a week without having any time to work on it, to a week where I do nothing but the FGMMA. (I’m working on a major upgrade right now, with all sorts of bells and whistles that I’m probably going to regret)

QC: Do you have any other projects going on right now besides your site?

F: Just the FGMMA and school.

QC: What are some of your favorite sites, besides your own that is?

F: Well, I’ve got lots of sites I visit on a daily basis. The Morning Improv, Exploding Dog, Rotten.com, Something Awful, Rather Good, the Onion, ExtremeTech, Slashdot, Ain’t It Cool News, and DamnYouAll.net for course.

QC: What's your favorite episode of Family Guy and why?

F: It’d be Road to Rhode Island followed closely by Brian Wallows, Peter(‘s) Swallows. Mainly because I just enjoy Brian that dang much and those episodes feature him.

QC: What's your best advice to someone interested in starting a site?

F: 1. The number one rule of every single website is Content is King. If your site looks good, that’s fine, but people aren’t going to visit it if it’s nothing but the same old barebones character and episode guide.

2. You have to find a niche that hasn’t been filled in the online community and fill it.

3. It’s also very helpful to know what you’re doing first. It’s possible to build a site with no knowledge about making websites whatsoever, but chances are that it’s just not going to be the best. You’ve should know about browser compatibility, image optimization, building for different resolutions, what your audience wants, and god knows what else (but then again… I’m just a geek who loves that sort of stuff anyway)

4. Plan out your site before you start anything. I knew what the layout and flow of the FGMMA was going to be long before I started to work on it. I knew what content I would make, what file structure to use, what colors I wanted.

QC: Any closing words?

F: Be sure to visit the FGMMA. :-D And don’t ask what the password is for audio or video because then I’ll hunt you down.
